Let’s continue where we left off, and feel free to also discuss what we’ve
previously read, as we didn’t have a lot of time to thoroughly discuss the last
couple chapters yet!

-How big of a problem/How common is it to have women that know absolutely
nothing about their sexual organs or reproductive system? I will admit to
knowing almost nothing when I conceived our first baby – and have learned tons
since – but it’s where I always start when educating mothers. I think people
assume that if a woman is pregnant – she knows the detailed process of her cycle
and systems…. Maybe this is just our little, rural area?

-Page 45 says that ovaries take turns releasing eggs, first the left then the
right. I recently read that this is incorrect – anyone have info regarding
this? I’ll look it up as well…

-I think it’s incredible that your body changes the amniotic water 8 times every
24 hours! Looking for documented source of this…

-I would have liked more information on the links between the birth experience
and intercourse and orgasm. I thought this chapter title was a bit misleading.

Childbirth Mechanics

Let’s talk about the natural childbirth mechanics of it all!!

-Out of curiosity, what language do you use when talking about contractions? Labour pains, surges, rushes, expansions, etc??

I usually say contraction because that’s what people are used to, but I like the word sensations because they really are different for everyone

-I’m glad the author points out the fact that effacement certainly does not predict when the baby will make an appearance, but it would have been nice if she didn’t imply that your Dr. is going to know the effacement near the end of your pregnancy, because they really don’t need to be in there doing vaginal exams anyways!

I agree, No VE’s for me!

-I don’t agree with the recommendation or suggestion to “push and push and push with it and move her baby down…” I recommend push less birth to the mamas I serve, and with great success. No purple pushing!

Let the FER do its job!! Much easier to let your body do the work and just step aside

- I felt this chapter was missing some depth as well, there’s a lot missing from this explanation of the mechanics of labour.

What do you girls think? Would this chapter satisfy you if you were preparing for your first birth?

I think it’s really misleading to describe the birth process in stages and time lengths. EVERY birth process is different! Some women have spaced out contractions, some have them on top of another and some are irregular and it’s important that women know they aren’t broken if they don’t fit the prescribed pattern.
